Hello world,
My name is Susan.

I'm a passionate web designer/developer/consultant located in Toroto, Canada. I work primarily with Microsoft technologies including Sharepoint, ASP .NET, and Visual Studio. When I'm not on the task to design or implement, I prefer to sketch in my pocket sketchbook or paint on my handmade canvas. I am a rare breed of Computer Science major and Fine Arts minor graduated from the University of Waterloo.

Projects, Photography, Paintings,
and all that jazz

China Red

china red

A series of four painted on 24 by 24 inches handmade canvas. Three of them are mixed media: acrylic base, thick oil paint to create texture, then glued with gold leaves, beautiful beads, and Chinese knots. The last one (or first one) is a hard edged acrylic painting with oriental designs.

The Gaze

stain and overlay: the gaze

This is the largest painting that I've ever attempted - 48 by 48 inches. The canvas alone took me 4 hours to make including some help from others. I first painted it with a wash of acrylic without any gesso. I then painted on top of it with a thicker layer. It was born as a stain, but now it's an overlay painting.

Rainy Day

oil painting: rainy day

This is easily one of my favorite paintings. The subjects are a couple that I am very familiar with (yours truly). It's an oil painting on a 36 by 48 inches canvas. The colors are muted to achieve the rainy and romantic atmosphere. Click on the image below to see the painting progress.

Hou Hai

stain

The space within the painting is inspired by the four photos I gathered (some are taken by me). Although it is fictional, I think it represents my impression of Hou Hai with a twist. The style of painting I attempted very much resembles Chinese traditional painting.

Nude

nude portrait

I've always been a fan of portrait painting. This 36 by 48 inches oil painting was completed under 4 sessions with the model, which totals 12 hours. The painting is still incomplete as 4 sessions was all I can get, but I think I've captured the essence.

Still Life

still life

The painting is supposed to create a composition of high contrast, but I don't think I've chosen the subject matter wisely. Though nevertheless, the end result is a decorative piece in my bedroom, right next to the same bed stand painted.

Abstract

abstract

Although the painting is an abstract piece, but the subject matter is an alteration of female Chinese fabrics. Some people see the resemblance immediately, while others struggle. That's the beauty of abstraction in my opinion. While painting it, I kept on having the imagery of plum flower blossoming in snow.
